This is an attractive - and actually rarely found! - greyish-silver-toned- and typical zinc- (ie. 'Feinzink'-) based WH (Heeres) 'Gebirgsjäger'-related item: a semi-official, commemorative-medal (aka: 'Url' or: luck-bringer) depicting on its front a K98-rifle, a ski and some 'Gebirgjäger'-equipment and on its back an 'Edelweiss'-flower and (superimposed) text that simply reads: '1.Geb.Jäg. Ers. Btl. 98 - Weinachten 1943' and that comes in an overall very nice-, albeit clearly used- ie. worn, condition. The neat shield-shaped piece (approximately sized: 4,4 x 3,3 cms.) depicts a neat illustration of some 'Gebirgjäger'-equipment (ie. K98-rifle, ice-pick and back-pack with other equipment). On its back it shows the famous 'Edelweiss'-flower and (superimposed) text that simply reads: '1.Geb.Jäg. Ers. Btl. 98 - Weihnachten 1943'. The piece is constructed from typical greyish-silver-toned zinc and shows most of its original finish: it has really nice and/or pronounced detail. I know that these desirable 'semi-official'-medals are also copied: this is naturally a genuine example that was never before part of a collection and originates from a German private-household where it was recently uncovered. There is not much known about these commemorative 'medals' but they were most certainly highly desirable 'souvenir'-pieces that could be won by the soldiers active in this war-area (even that late in the war ie. in 1943). In any case is this a very attractive - and without doubt rarely seen! - 'Gebirgsjäger'-related item!
