These attractive Spanish medals - which were issued in order to commemorate the Spanish Civil War and are often found among German medal-groups since it was liberally bestowed on Spain's allies. The medal on offer here is a very detailed example and has a neat - albeit minimally tarnished - age-patina: it comes together with its original (ie. 19 cms.-sized and never confectioned- ie. 'virtually mint'!) ribbon (ie. 'Bandabschitt') as issued but simply never mounted. The front of the medal shows a lion crushing a dragon bearing a hammer and sickle underfoot imposed on a gilt cross made up of four swords, a radiant sun and the date: '17 Julio 1936' above, all within a gilt border with an oak and laurel wreath, signed: 'España'; the reverse shows a gilt eagle soaring above the arms of Spain, a helmet and the yoke and arrows symbol of the Falangists within a circular border inscribed: 'Arriba España - Genessmo. Franco Victor. - Una Grande, Libre, Imperial, M. Hisp.Glor.' as to be expected. Simply a neat medal from one of Germany's allies that originates from a German private-household and that was with certainty awarded to a German soldier or NCO: hard to find a more nicely preserved example for a more interesting price!
